Lula S. Black came to Albuquerque in 1880 from San Francisco, California. Lula Black wanted to give the local black matrons something to do, so she used her skills as teacher and principal to organize the home circle club in 1914. Her belief was women set the social standards for their home and for society; therefore, young married women should be culturally aware and conversant with the latest literary works and music. The home circle club was originally part of the colored Women's Federation Club Network but withdrew to become an independent organization. After eighty-six years, the Home Circle Club or Albuquerque still exist and contributes annually to scholarships for black students. | |
