Abraham Lincoln Mitchell helped to organize the NAACP in 1912, which started as the Albuquerque independent society. The NAACP became a chartered branch in 1915, one of the oldest branches in the country. Mr. Mitchell also served as the first director of the little forum club. This club was organized to encourage young blacks to attend high school. The little forum club taught them to maintain a high standard in their behavior and the club also promoted intellectual advancement. The club had a fifty percent success rate for high school graduates and some students went on to college. Mr. Mitchell was given the United Nations award. He also was honored with a scholarship placed in his honor at the University of New Mexico by Dorothy Coulter. At the time Mr. Mitchell was being honored for his outstanding work in the community, he served as a member of the board for the Boys Club, United Christian Fellowship of Protestant Students at UNM, a past grand master of Prince Hall Mason and the American Association for the United Nations.. |
