William Slaughter, in 1882, and other concerned individuals organized the New Mexico Colored Religious Society, which eventually became the Colored Methodist Mission, now known as Grant Chapel. The Methodist Mission was located in west Albuquerque. Some of the very first families who attended the Mission were John Hutchinson, A.B. Montgomery, George Reed, Howard Kerr, Allen Carter, William Slaughter, Edward Click, Edward Clark, Joe Brown, Matthew Cook, George Ward, Jim Richeys, and Reverend Spotworth Rice served as the minister. In 1883, the Colored Methodist Mission was given land donated by the New Mexico township for the formation of "New Town". They were given two lots at the corner of Coal and Third Street. The original name recorded for the church after the donation of the land was Coal Avenue Methodist Church. The name was changed July 24, 1905 to Grant Chapel and is believed named for Bishop Abraham Grant, who was the bishop of the Fifth Episcopal District at that time. | |
