
LT. Henry O. Flipper | Lieutenant Henry O. Flipper was the first black to receive a commission and graduate from west point. This was the beginning of a 40-year military career in New Mexico. Lt. Flipper served with the 10th cavalry, a regiment of black troops that achieved an excellent combat record in New Mexico and the southwest. He spent 37 years as a civil and mining engineer in New Mexico and Mexico and became the first black to gain recognition in the engineering profession." | |
